Color coated sheets, also referred to as colour coated steel sheets or Pre-Painted Galvanized Iron (PPGI) coils, are steel sheets coated with a protective and decorative layer of paint. This coating enhances the steel's aesthetic appeal while providing robust protection against corrosion, UV radiation, and harsh weather conditions. Known for their durability and versatility, these sheets are widely used in industries like construction, appliances, and automotive manufacturing.
In our company, we take pride in delivering high-quality PPGI coils that meet global standards, offering tailored solutions for projects worldwide, including South America. In this guide, we'll dive into the production process, key features, applications, environmental benefits, and why our company is your ideal partner for color coated sheets.
The manufacturing of color coated sheets involves a series of precise steps to ensure durability and performance. Here's how crafts its PPGI coils:
Base Material Selection
We start with premium steel substrates, such as hot-dip galvanized steel (zinc coating: 60-275 g/m²) or aluminum-zinc alloy-coated steel (Galvalume, with 55% aluminum, 43.5% zinc, 1.5% silicon). These substrates provide a strong foundation for corrosion resistance.
Cleaning and Pretreatment
The steel is thoroughly cleaned to remove impurities like oil and rust, followed by a chemical pretreatment to enhance coating adhesion. This step ensures the paint bonds seamlessly, preventing peeling over time.
Coating Application
A primer (5-10 microns) is applied, followed by a topcoat (20-30 microns) of high-quality paint, such as polyester (PE), polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), high-durability polyester (HDP), or silicone-modified polyester (SMP). We use coatings from trusted brands like AkzoNobel and PPG to ensure long-lasting performance.
Curing and Quality Control
The coated steel is cured in ovens at 200-250°C to solidify the paint, creating a weather-resistant finish. Each coil undergoes rigorous testing, including lacquer film thickness checks, T-bend tests, impact tests, and salt spray tests (up to 1000 hours per ASTM B117).
Key Features of Color Coated Sheets
Our PPGI coils are designed to deliver exceptional performance across applications. Here are their standout features:
Superior Corrosion Resistance
The combination of an aluminum-zinc alloy base and premium coatings ensures 10-30 years of corrosion protection. For example, PVDF-coated sheets can withstand 1000 hours of salt spray testing, making them ideal for coastal regions like Brazil's Atlantic coast.
Aesthetic Versatility
Available in a wide range of colors (RAL chart), our sheets offer lasting vibrancy. PVDF coatings provide up to 20 years of fade resistance, ensuring your project looks stunning for decades.
Excellent Processability
With high-adhesion coatings, our coils support shearing, stamping, bending, and molding. T-bend tests show they can handle bends as tight as 0T-2T without cracking, perfect for complex designs.
Lightweight and Strong
Compared to alternatives like stainless steel (7.8 g/cm³), our aluminum-based PPGI coils (2.7 g/cm³) are lighter, reducing structural load while maintaining strength.
